Top Quality Furniture at a Skinflint Price

If your apartment or home needs new furniture, you may be dreading shelling out a massive amount of money for quality furniture. After all, you want items that will last for a long time, as well as look good in your home.

But don’t despair! You don’t have to spend a fortune on your furniture, but you can find good stuff at a fairly low price IF you shop smart!

Buy at the Right Time

You’ll find that EVERY furniture store offers special deals for the major holidays, particularly around Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Veteran’s Day, and Memorial Day. They try to entice people in their stores with the promise of special prices, and these are good times to take advantage of good deals if you NEED furniture now.

If, however, you can wait a bit, hold off until Christmas and the Fourth of July. This is when the furniture stores are trying to get rid of all of their old inventory in order to bring in the new stuff, so they’ll often slash prices viciously. This is the best time to shop for furniture, as that’s when you’ll find the best discounts.

Go Used

If you drive a “pre-owned” car, you know great used stuff can be. It’s time to hit up your local second hand stores to see if they have good furniture for sale, or check out local flea markets. Hit up garage sales, and check out their furniture before you go to the big furniture stores.

You’ll be amazed by all the great stuff you can find just by searching for used furniture. It may not be as good as you want, but you can spend far less and get a lot more. You can always cover that stain with a nice throw blanket, or simply get the couch reupholstered at a far lower price.

Hit Up Craigslist

Want to find a good piece of furniture at a GREAT price? Craigslist is usually a pretty good place to check out, as people often list furniture there when they are trying to sell it off quickly. You’ll want to look for “Moving Out of Town” sales, as the owners of the furniture will want to get rid of it quickly, but it’s still usually in pretty good condition.

Also, you’ll find that Craigslist can provide you with a lot of free furniture. It may not look very good, but you can always have it reupholstered for a far lower price than you would pay for brand new furniture. Even if you pay a little to get the couch or bed looking good as new, you’ll pay far less than you would if you bought it new.

Check Out Freecycle

Freecycle is a website filled with people giving away old, used stuff to people who want it. They do so in order to reduce the amount of waste that is sent to garbage dumps, thereby helping to protect the planet. It’s an interesting way to recycle, and it’s a great place to find old, used furniture.

Again, the quality of the furniture will vary from person to person, but often people will be trying to get rid of their furniture as they are leaving town. You should check out the website to see if there is anything you can get your hands on for free.

If you are going to go to a furniture store to buy brand new, NEVER pay the asking price. Dress simply, and avoid wearing brand name or designer clothing. You want to look like you can’t afford to pay full price, and it will give you a bit of leverage in the negotiation.

Furniture stores ALWAYS mark their items way up, so you can haggle the price down by as much as 20%. Either ask for extras (free delivery or free throw pillows), or else ask for a price reduction.
