The Best Things In Life Are Free

sunriseSometimes we get so bogged down with budgets and the stress of managing money that we neglect to notice that some of the best things in life are free. Take some time each day to notice the wonderful things around you that don’t cost a dime while being worth so much more. It will put everything else in perspective and create a sense of gratitude for what you have rather than a longing for what you lack. All of these things are free:

  • A baby’s giggle
  • Giving someone a hug
  • Watching a sunrise or sunset
  • Catching up on life with an old friend
  • The smell of the air after it rains
  • A good night’s sleep
  • Eye contact across a crowded room
  • Smiling at a stranger and them smiling back
  • Holding hands with that special someone
  • A walk in the park
  • Laying on your back in the grass and looking at the stars
  • Laughing so hard it hurts
  • Wildflowers in the spring
  • A handwritten note
  • Being with family
  • Listening to nature’s serenade (crickets, birds, waterfalls, wind in the trees)
  • Sitting in the shade of a large oak tree on a summer day
  • The muffled sound of the city after a snowfall
  • The way trees display season changes
  • Watching a lightning storm in the distance
  • Sitting on the beach listening to the sound of waves breaking on the shore
  • Snuggling with your children
  • A goodnight kiss from the love of your life
  • Sunday afternoon naps
  • Exercise
  • People-watching in a busy public place
  • Playing charades
  • Thumb wars
  • Playing tag on the playground
  • Building a sandcastle
  • A deep breath
  • Prayer
  • Music
  • Dancing like nobody’s watching
  • The public library
  • Quality conversation
  • A wink
  • A gentle breeze cooling the air and painting patterns on the surface of the water
  • The sound of leaves crunching beneath your feet
  • Seeing snow fall from the sky
  • Climbing a tree as an adult
  • Watching birds build a nest
  • The first swim of the summer
  • Clouds that shape shift
  • Memories made in the innocence of childhood
  • Sitting with friends and sharing your favorite stories
  • Inside jokes
  • Texture
  • Looking for a four-leaf clover
  • Playing hide and seek
  • A firm handshake
  • Dreams
  • Tickle wars
  • All five senses
  • Skipping rocks across a pond
  • The warmth of the sun
  • Rainbows
  • Catching fireflies
  • Scenic views
  • Helping someone by holding the door, carrying bags, giving directions or picking up something they dropped
  • Shadow puppets
  • Someone trusting you with a secret
  • Singing Happy Birthday to someone
  • Telling a friend you’ve been thinking about them
  • Compliments
  • A listening ear
  • The smell of honeysuckle or lilac in bloom
  • Watching a dog wag its tail in excitement
  • Remembering what you have to be thankful for

This is a great list to get you thinking in the right direction. If you need help coming up with more, watch kids play outside. They seem to find all kinds of free joys that adults overlook (butterflies, roly polies, dandelions, pretending, etc.). What other free suggestions would you add?
