Jet Setting on a Budget

There’s nothing quite as awesome as being able to travel around the world on holiday. You’re able to spend your vacation days visiting new countries, seeing amazing sights, and taking in some of the amazing cultures that this world has to offer. For those who can afford it, jet setting around the world is truly one of the most valuable life experiences.

Thankfully, the cost of flying around the world isn’t what it once was. While people once spent thousands of dollars on short flights, the cost of travel has become much lower. You’ll find that it’s much more affordable to travel, and it will become even more so if you use the smart flight shopping tips below:

Always Buy Early

If you are planning to travel, make sure to buy your tickets as much ahead of time as possible. You’ll find that most airlines offer tickets up to three or four months in advance, and you’ll usually get a pretty good price if you buy your tickets this early. It’s not always possible, but whenever you can, make sure to book your tickets well in advance of the trip.

Walk into the Airport

Interestingly enough, last-minute tickets are often surprisingly affordable. The airline will usually be trying to fill its seats, and they’ll be happy to sell you their last ticket or two at a reasonable price. It doesn’t always work out, but sites like Independent Traveler will give you a list of many travel deals that you can use at the last minute.

Sign up for the Newsletter

If you prefer to fly a specific airline, why not sign up for that airline’s newsletter? They’ll send out the latest information on their company changes and upgrades, and they’ll let you know about any deals that they’re offering – whether seasonal or long-term. If you sign up for the newsletter, you can find out about some pretty sweet travel deals!

Compare Prices

If you know where you want to go for your holiday, it’s time to get online and start shopping around for a good deal. You’ll find that sites like Orbitz allow you to compare the prices from all of the major airlines, and you can get a good idea of how much you’re going to spend on your flight. Trip Advisor is another great site to help you compare prices, and you’ll find that there are many sites you can use to find the lowest fare on your tickets.

Buy at the Right Time of Year

There is the peak season – the time of year when people are traveling – and then there is off-season. You’ll find that tickets during the off-season are usually much cheaper, and that’s the time of year when you want to buy tickets. Depending on your destination, off-season may be a different time of year than you’d expect. Make sure to do your research and find out when the best time of year to buy your tickets is.

Buy for the Right Time of Day

It’s amazing how few people want to enjoy the comforts of an overnight flight, so you’ll often be able to get a better deal if your plane lands or arrives at odd hours. For example, a flight leaving at 4 AM will often be fairly empty, so the airline will offer great prices to fill seats. Check out flights at the odd hours, and you may be surprised to find a pretty sweet deal.

Check Other Airports

If you live in a major hub, the cost of flying to and from that airport may be pretty high. However, if you live near smaller airports, it may be possible to drive to those airports and take a cheaper flight to your destination. This may not always be possible, but it will be a good option to consider if you’re looking for cheap flights.

Check Discount Airlines

Discount airlines certainly aren’t the most comfortable or luxurious option, but they’ll often be the cheaper choice. Airlines like Jet Blue or Air Tran will allow you to fly at a pretty good price, but the airline will be much less reliable. It’s worth considering, though, if you want to save money on your flight.
