Setting up a home gym will help you to save a small fortune, as you won’t have to pay for a gym membership to be able to work out. You can set up a pretty sweet gym for a reasonable price, you just have to know how to find the right gear at the right cost. Here are some things you’ll need for your home gym:
Pull-Up Bar – You don’t have to buy a fancy pull-up bar to hang over your door frames, as they cost upwards of $50. Instead, find a place in your home where you can install a bar, and use concrete, wood, and bolts to sink the wood into place. It will cost you $10 in all!
Dumbbells – Investing in a pair of dumbbells will be necessary if you’re going to lift weights and get strong, and you’ll find that a pair of dumbbell handles with the collars can cost you around $50 without the weights. Look in garage sales and used sporting goods stores to find cheap dumbbell sets, and get no more than 50 pounds of weight to start out.
DVD Workouts – This is a great way to save money on your home gym setup, and you’ll be able to get in great shape on the cheap! You always have a TV at home, so check around bargain bins and used DVD stores to find $2 workout videos. You’ll find garage sales are a great place to look for these videos, as they’ll be used but very cheap. DVD videos can give you a full body workout, and without the need for any weights.
Exercise Mat – A Yoga mat is necessary if you’re going to be doing floor workouts, but you’ll find that a top-notch one will run you up to $20. Wal-Mart sells them for about $10, and they’re of decent quality. Goodwill often has them, but you will need to check the store on the day that they put out the new merchandise because these mats are very popular. If you can’t afford a Yoga mat but need to do floor workouts, your baby’s old play mats will work in a pinch.
Bench – A weight bench is an absolute must if you are going to be doing regular weight lifting, but they can be quite expensive if bought brand new. Garage sales are your best option, but Craigslist will also help you to find great deals on weight benches. Many people will have old, used benches for sale at a very low price, and you can re-finish the bench or just use it if it’s not in too poor condition.
Cardio Machine – The truth is that you don’t really need a cardio machine for your workouts, but you can get great cardio in the streets and parks around your house. Investing in a bike can be a lot more money than you want to spend, but a good pair of running shoes can be $25 — and running on the streets is free! If you have a park near your home, you can run to the park, play sports, and run home. You’ll get cardio, and at no cost to you other than the clothes and shoes.
If you want to get in shape, do bodyweight exercises like push-ups, pull-ups, squats, lunges, etc. These exercises won’t require the use of weights, and they’ll enable you to get a great workout without your needing to spend a cent!
