How to Cut Your Cable Bill

You’d be amazed by how much you can end up spending on your cable bill! The cost of cable is constantly rising, and the truth is that you don’t really NEED cable. Here is some advice on how to cut your cable bill:

Call Customer Service – There are two reasons to do this:

1)      Check on your current rates.  Cable companies will offer special deals when you sign up, but they may only last a year or two. Once that time is up, they can charge whatever they want. If you notice that your bills are getting higher, call and find out what you’re currently paying.

2)      Try to cancel the service. You don’t actually want to cancel, but you want to make them think you are. Instead of losing your business, they’ll usually offer a “special price” to entice you to stay. You can get a great deal that way, so it’s worth a shot!

Consider Dish or DirecTV — These are both good options for homeowners or those who plan to stay in the same location for years. The average cost of these dish services is anywhere from $30 to $40 per month, while cable is rarely lower than $50 per month. Not only is cable pricier, but you often get fewer channels. If you want to pay less, look into these alternatives.

Use the internet – And no, we’re not talking about illegal video downloading or streaming. The truth is that many cable networks make their programs available via their website. You can log onto the respective network websites (ABC, NBC, the CW, etc.) and watch the latest episodes of your favorite shows right there on the site. You won’t be able to watch the older episodes, but if you’re trying to stay up to date with the latest on TV, this is a great way to go.

Try Netflix – Netflix is one of the best options for those who watch a lot of movies, but aren’t too worried about staying up to date with the latest TV shows. Netflix has an immense selection of both old and new movies, but they’re often a year behind on TV shows. There are a few Netflix exclusive shows that you can’t find anywhere else. The cost of Netflix is MUCH lower than your cable bill, so it’s definitely worth considering this option.

Consider Hulu Plus – If you’re a TV addict, Hulu Plus is the service to consider. It’s roughly the same price as Netflix, but they post the latest episodes of your favorite TV shows the day after they air. The movie selection isn’t quite as extensive as Netflix and they don’t have the same quality of original content, but TV addicts will find that Hulu Plus is often the better way to get their fix.

Downgrade your package –If you’re spending a lot on your cable bill, it may be a good idea to downgrade your package. You may lose a few channels (HBO, a few sports channels, etc.), but it will be a good way to cut costs.

Use RedBox — For just $1, you can rent the latest movies to watch from the comfort of your home. RedBox vending machines are available at just about every supermarket around the country, so you can pick up new movies when you do your weekly shopping. If you only watch movies on TV, this is a great way to save money and still enjoy nightly entertainment.

You don’t have to pay a fortune for cable, not with all the options available in this modern day and age!
